Travel Insurance

Visitors are advised to obtain traveler’s insurance that includes medical and emergency evacuation coverage.  Medical costs are not as high as in the west, but they can still be significant if specialized or lengthy procedures are needed.more...

Picture Safety

Armenia, by any comparative measure, is a very safe country, and the capital, Yerevan is extremely safe for its size (about 1 million); safer than most cities in Europe and the United States.  Random crimes against individuals such as muggings, robbery, etc. are rare.more...

Picture Medical Kit

The average visitor does not require a first aid kit, though many bring a basic kit over as a simple precaution.  Over the counter medications and first aid kits are available in Yerevan for those who want to buy one here.  Those who are on prescription drugs should bring enough to last their trip.more...

Police Stations

Police stations are located in the center of each city or town, with multiple precincts in Yerevan, Giumri, Vanadzor and other larger cities.
Policemen rarely speak anything other than Russian or Armenian, so having an interpreter with you if you need assistance is required.more...

Picture Precautions

The best prevention of health problems is to be in good health before you travel.  It is also necessary to take simple precautions, and monitor yourself as you go.  The most common complaint by visitors to Armenia are upset stomachs from drinking unfiltered water and eating a local diet rich in fat and spices and fatigue from trying to see too much too quickly.more...

Picture Optical

Optical service is much cheaper than in the west, though it uses the same western eyeglasses and contacts.
Opticians are in optical centers, pharmacies and clinics.  Services include eye tests (3000-5000 AMD), fittings and eyeglass or contact lens supply.

Dental Services

Dental work is a fraction of what it costs in the west, and dentists are highly skilled at their work, many using the latest in European and American equipment.  It is little wonder so many Diaspora Armenians save their dental work for their trips to Armenia!  For advanced work, it can be cheaper to combine your travels to Armenia with dental work than to do it alone at home.
The best equipped dentists are in Yerevan, though new clinics are opening in regional cities like Giumri and Vanadzor.

Picture Foreign Language Doctors

Almost all doctors speak  Russian and Armenian, with English spoken by some in Yerevan and larger cities.  A few speak French and German.
Check with your Embassy Consulate before you leave to obtain a current list of doctors fluent in your language.
The US CONSULATE OFFICE of the US EMBASSY maintains a list of English speaking medical professionals at http://armenia.usembassy.gov/acs_medical.html

Picture Hospitals and Clinics

Medical standards have greatly improved in the past decade.  A fully equipped medical center has been built in central Yerevan, and major cities have upgraded services significantly.  Still, Armenian standards in hospitals are not like those in the West; surgeons and doctors are quite skilled, but they may be lacking some of the supplies and medications we take for granted.more...

Picture Pharmacies

There are registered pharmacies throughout Armenia, carrying over-the-counter medications along with prescription medicines.  Some carry toiletries, which can also be found along with basic over-the-counter medicines at larger hotels and supermarkets.more...
