In the rolling green hills of the remote Shamshadin region is the 13th century Nor Varagavank Monastery.  Originally called Anapat, it was renamed Nor Varagavank when the Armenian Patriarch fled the mongol invasion near Lake Van, bringing a piece of the true cross with him to Nor Varagavank.  The Church of the Holy Virgin is the largest of the complex, and has a stunning portal consisting of carved purple and green stones.
