Armenia is a great destination for those who are traveling while on a budget. You will find most things to be quite affordable, from food, accommodations, getting around and activities.

Cheap Accomodations in Armenia

Traveling to Armenia suits every budget. Whether you prefer top-rated hotels, where presidents and famous artists have spent a night, or simple hostels, where every guest is treated by a special mood of hospitality, you will find your own legend in Armenia. 

You can certainly catch a good deal on top-rated hotels or find a budget friendly hostels. Armenia is full of a various hostels suitable for both young and old backpackers. Some hostels offer shared rooms, allowing you to develop new friends, while others have seperate rooms for those who feel more comfortable alone. Other options include bed and breakfasts, renting a room, or finding a homestay in the villages.

If you're up for the adventure and the weather is warm, you can also go camping! Camping is even cheaper than the stay in the hostels. There are many campsites in Armenia, including some in the capital city. You’ll be able to find cooking facilities and bathrooms in the nearby area.

Budget Friendly Armenian Food

Food is great and cheap. Most local foods are for about a dollar or two. In some of the tourist areas and in Yerevan the prices rise in the center, but if you leave the main area and head away on side roads you can find a lot of cheap food. Depending on the time of the year that you arrive in Armenia some foods will be a lot cheaper than others, just look through the marketplace and you will find a lot of great deals.

Another way to eat on budget while traveling is to cook your own food. Armenian marketplaces are full of cheap, fresh and incredibly tasty products. If you’re staying in a hostel you will most likely have cooking accommodations.
If cooking for yourself is too much work, the best advice is follow the locals. Often tourist hotspots have in comparison higher prices. The locals on the other hand know all the best cheap places. You’ll get a chance to experience the local authentic cuisine without sacrificing your wallet.

​Transportation in Armenia

Transportation in Armenia is quite accessible. Buses, minivans and metro are available in the capital city. The buses and the subway have devices that announce the stops in 3 languages including Armenian, Russian and English. The locals are also very helpful as most Armenians know Russian and English.

Inside Yerevan you’re not going to have too many difficult getting around but in the countryside you will lose most of your best options. There are many buses that drive to the different ends of the country, yet after reaching the destination you may not be able to use public transportation to get around that area. While this mostly depends on the place, don’t worry! Joining the locals is fun!

Hitchhiking Your Way Through Armenia

There is one other option. Hitchhiking. Hitchhiking works, getting a ride in Armenia is easy. Normally people will pick you up in pickup trucks or cars and give you a ride. Sometimes they will even invite you home to stay with their family. Knowing that Armenia is one of the safest countries in the world makes the hitchhiking experience less stressful and more fun even if it's your first time trying. 

Armenia is a hitchhiker’s paradise as you’ll get to experience the local culture and cuisine on the personal level. Armenians are known all around the world for their hospitality. You’ll end up having fun along the ride and consuming great amounts of free food offered by the locals. It’s almost a rule that the locals will invite you to their house after the ride for a dinner. Not only that, but you’ll also get to receive information about many beautiful locations that aren’t very known among tourists.
