Autumn in Armenia: a mosaic of colors, flavors, and emotions

In Armenia, autumn is a season of wonders: the light grows softer, vineyards and forests take on golden hues, and the country comes alive with events that blend culture, gastronomy, and outdoor adventure.

Autumn in Armenia transforms the landscape into a palette of forests, vineyards, and pastures in shades of red and gold. The weather is mild, the air crisp, and the leaves colorful. The crowds have thinned, yet there is still plenty to experience. The season is enriched by unmissable events such as the Areni Wine Festival, the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, and a variety of outdoor activities, from paragliding to trekking among the foliage. It is a journey that combines nature, culture, and taste, offering unforgettable emotions.

The charm of foliage and nature, from above

The horizon is particularly clear in October and November, making it easier to enjoy sunsets over Yerevan and its surroundings. Those seeking a view from the sky should not miss the “Discover Armenia from the Sky” International Hot Air Balloon Festival from 11 to 15 October, when balloons from around the world gather in Yerevan’s Republic Square and other locations in Armenia, offering the chance to experience an unforgettable flight. And for those who want to take the adventure further, paragliding over Lake Sevan, or Azat Reservoir reveals the season’s vibrant contrasts from a truly breathtaking perspective.

Outdoor experiences

Armenia’s landscapes offer a spectacular display of changing lights and colors, even for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. Dilijan National Park invites visitors to explore trails through dense forests, with scenic views of Lake Parz, and Lake Gosh. The Lori region is another popular destination for those wishing to immerse themselves in autumn-colored woods, Stepanavan Dendropark is home to over 500 plant species, each with its own unique range of colors in the fall season. Road trips to Jermuk, Armenia’s most renowned spa town, reveal waterfalls, valleys, and unspoiled corners, perfect for those seeking landscapes where nature is the star.

Autumn events

Autumn means wine. On Saturday, 4 October, the Areni Wine Festival celebrates Armenia’s winemaking excellence in the Areni wine region, home to the world’s oldest known winery, dating back 6,100 years. It is an opportunity to experience village life, meet local producers and wine lovers, and enjoy tastings, music, and folk traditions. Also, on Saturday, 4 October, the Yerevan Marathon takes place for those eager to run through the city streets. Founded in 782 BC - 29 years before Rome - the Armenian capital is a lively and welcoming urban center, dotted with parks and green spaces that are at their best in autumn. Both of these highlights are part of the vibrant autumn events in Armenia that make the season so unforgettable.

An autumn to savor

In Yerevan, wine bars, cafés, and restaurants offer the chance to enjoy traditional dishes with a good glass of wine, but the experience becomes even more memorable with a visit to a winery outside the city, where it is possible to share a bottle (or two), a cheese board, live music, and views of vineyards at sunset. Smaller wineries often seek help during harvest season, making it possible to join in grape picking and truly embrace the spirit of the season. Among the traditional dishes, a standout is ghapama, a festive baked pumpkin stuffed with rice, dried fruits, honey, and butter.

Mild weather, landscapes that change like a living painting, and events celebrating wine, culture, and traditions make autumn in Armenia an experience to remember.
