“Shnorhavor Amanor yev Surb Tznund!” is the Armenian way to wish Merry Christmas to someone. Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion. The Apostolic Church celebrates Christmas on the 6th day of January. Armenians gather with all of their family to celebrate Christmas all together. As the first country to adopt Christianity in the world, Christmas is an important holiday in Armenia.
Unlike the New Year, which is a more festive and commercial holiday, Christmas takes a large place in Armenian families. It is a time of sharing, first during Mass and then during the feast, that brings the whole family together in a festive and more religious atmosphere than the New Year. Armenians don't offer presents and gifts during the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, they prefer to do it during the New Year celebration, to focus more on the family moment and religious celebration on Christmas.
