What to try in Armenia
Although Armenia is absolutely stunning year-round, winter in Armenia is truly something special.
01
Skiing & Snowboarding
Skiers and snowboarders can explore the scenic slopes of Tsaghkadzor, a charming resort town nestled in the stunning Mount Teghenis, or head to the modern MyLer Mountain Resort near Yeghipatrush, just a short drive from the capital city, Yerevan. With breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks as your backdrop, you'll feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, both resorts offer ski lessons and equipment rentals to help you make the most of your time on the slopes.
02
Hot Springs
Armenia has many hot springs spread throughout the country where you can relax in any of the hot pools, jacuzzis, or saunas. The most well-known are those at Jermuk, which is roughly a two-hour drive from Yerevan. However, others are significantly closer, such as Aghveran, approximately an hour distant, or Hankavan, which is around 45 minutes away from the city.
03
Visit a Christmas Market
Like most European capitals, Yerevan is home to a lovely Christmas market in the days leading up to the festivities. While Republic Square is lit up with a massive tree and the city streets begin to resemble Christmas, bear in mind that the main event is New Year's Eve, as Christmas in Armenia occurs on January 6th and is largely a family affair. Regardless, treat yourself to hot chocolate, pastries, corn on the cob, mulled wine, and other holiday treats at the Christmas Market that starts near Republic Square and extends up Northern Avenue.
04
Ice Skate in Yerevan
Head over to Swan Lake next to the Opera and Ballet Theater, rent yourself a pair of skates, and enjoy the romantic setting in the heart of the city. Enjoy all the food stalls, games, and mulled wine nearby when you get tired!
05
Eat Khash on Mount Aragats
Khash is a winter delicacy derived from the Armenian word for "boil." It consists of boiled cow foot with garlic and salt, and topped with dry day-old lavash bread... wash it down with a shot of homemade vodka (oghi) for the whole experience. You can enjoy Khash in all traditional Armenian restaurants, but the most exceptional Khash experience is near Kari Lake (Stone Lake) on Mount Aragats.
