While the vibrant rhythm of the city is alluring, to get a real taste of Armenia, you should consider visiting some countryside destinations. The authentic villages, the hospitable people, and the farm-to-table cuisine are what make this country exceptional.

Areni

Areni village, the birthplace of winemaking, is a top choice for a countryside journey, especially if you’re a wine enthusiast. Walk around the vineyards, participate in the harvesting and make wine with your own hands. Then, stay at a local guesthouse, and combine a tasty meal with a glass of homemade wine while listening to the stories of the locals. You can also check out the 13th-century St. Astvatsatsin church on the village's territory. If you visit Areni in October, you can experience the Areni Wine Festival – another reason to eat local delicacies, sip some wine, and take in folk music and dances.

Areni is easy to reach. Located in the Vayots Dzor region, it is only a 1.5-hour drive from Yerevan. Nearby Areni-1 cave and the Noravank Monastery will complete your trip.

Dsegh

Stunning nature scenes, rich cultural heritage, hiking, and cycling opportunities, and, of course, delicious eats and drinks? That looks a lot like Dsegh. During your visit, reset yourself and blend in with the fascinating natural background. Hike to "Tsover" lake in the nearby dense forests, stroll around the village, check out Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan's house museum, engage in discussions with the locals, and enjoy the local tastes. You can also do horse riding in the forests or rent bicycles to take in the views. And if you’re wondering where you should stay, glamping is a popular choice in Dsegh.

It takes about a 2.5-hour drive from Yerevan to reach Dsegh village high up on Dzoraget Canyon. Take the chance to recharge yourself physically and emotionally while discovering this village.

Odzun

For its authentic experiences, Odzun village is another must-visit. Along with seeing the Odzun church and taking in the dazzling scenery, you can also feel the warm hospitality of the locals. Someone will definitely treat you with herbal tea and a homemade jam while telling you their stories. Also, do not refrain from accepting the offer of a fine quince vodka from a local. It is absolutely worth trying and essential to complete your joyful trip to Odzun.

Odzun is located in the Lori region and is about a 3-hour drive from Yerevan. Remember to stop at the end of the village, near the cross-stone, to enjoy the panoramic view of the Debed river and have a higher view of Alaverdi city.

Garni

Garni is a go-to place for both locals and foreign guests. Make a "brduch" (roll) out of baked lavash and fill it with homemade cheese and fresh greens. Visit St. Mashtots church and Garni Temple in the village, sip the freshest water in the area, pick some walnuts, and taste gata, the traditional Armenian sweet bread. In Garni, there are several opportunities to interact with locals and eat a delectable lunch in a garden. A stroll to the Symphony of Stones in the canyon is another option for admiring the captivating natural scenery.

Garni is just a 40-min drive away from Yerevan. Use public transport from Gai Avenue or take a taxi to reach Garni faster. Stop at the Arch of Charents to snap beautiful pictures of Mount Ararat and the surrounding area.

Yenokavan

Yenokavan is the place to go if you want to experience a cozy atmosphere away from the city's hustle and bustle. Perched high on the mountainside, Yenokavan offers the most beautiful natural landscape and a variety of rejuvenating activities. You can go horseback riding through the woods, take a trek to the Lastiver waterfalls in the gorge, or just chill at Yell Extreme Park, which is very close to the village. Don't forget to take some lovely pictures, especially at dawn when the sunrise will leave you speechless!

Yenokavan is about a 2.5-hour drive from Yerevan. First, get to Ijevan by public transport and then shift to a taxi to reach Yenokavan. Keep your camera close by since the views from the roads are just as impressive as from the village.

Byurakan

Located on the slopes of Mt. Aragats, Byurakan welcomes its visitors at its local guesthouses and gastro yards. You can learn how to make sweet sujukh, a regional delicacy, help locals with the drying of fruits, and get firsthand experience with other rural options. Take advantage of the opportunity to visit the Byurakan Observatory and observe the night sky. If you have some free time, a visit to nearby Amberd Fortress and Lake Kari would be a great experience.

Located in the Aragatsotn region, Byurakan is just 40 minutes from Yerevan. Public transportation from Kilikia central bus station or any taxi will take you there within an hour. Check out some gastro tours or masterclass opportunities before visiting Byurakan.

Halidzor

If you want to experience a harmonious fusion of rural adventures, cultural elements, organic food, and beverages, Halidzor should be on your must-see list. Hire a local guide and go on a hike through the Old Halidzor village, on the outskirts of today's village. Visit the locals to sample Armenian lamb stew (khashlama), which is served with homemade cheese, pickled vegetables, and freshly baked bread. If you'd like, you can also assist the locals with harvesting or other agricultural and gardening tasks.

You will need approximately 4 hours to reach Halidzor village. It is close to Goris city and the renowned medieval Tatev Monastery. So, spend at least two days in Halidzor to enjoy it and the surrounding locations fully.
