The Armenian Genocide of 1915 claimed the lives of 1.5 million people. April 24 is observed as the official commemoration date, this is the day Armenian intellectuals were deported.
On this day, hundreds of thousands of people walk to the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial to pay their respects, laying flowers at the eternal flame. The 44-meter stele symbolizes the resilience and resurgence of the Armenian people, while twelve slabs encircling the flame represent the twelve lost provinces in modern-day Turkey. At the center of the circle, at a depth of 1.5-meters, is an eternal flame which honors the 1.5 million victims.
At the memorial, there is also a 100-meter wall which lists the cities and villages where massacres and deportations occurred, and on its reverse side, plaques commemorate individuals who devoted themselves to alleviating the suffering of survivors.
A tree-lined path has also been created at the memorial, serving as a living tribute to the victims of the genocide and a symbol of enduring memory.
