Easter, known as Zadig in Armenian, is one of the five major holidays of the Armenian Apostolic Church. As the first country to adopt Christianity as a state religion, Armenia places great importance on Easter, much like Christmas.
After attending Easter Mass, families gather to share a festive meal. Traditional dishes include fish, eggs, and rice pilaf prepared with dried apricots, prunes, and raisins. During the celebration, people greet each other with the phrase "Kristos haryav i merelots" ("Christ is risen from the dead") and respond with "Orhnyale e haroutiunen Kristosi" ("Blessed is the revelation of Christ").
A highlight of the feast is the beloved tradition of egg battles. Hard-boiled eggs, often beautifully painted beforehand, are used in an exciting egg-tapping game. The egg that remains unbroken after tapping others is declared the winner, adding a playful and joyous touch to this sacred holiday.
