What to try in Armenia

Although Armenia is absolutely stunning year-round, winter in Armenia is truly something special.

01

Skiing & Snowboarding

Skiers and snowboarders can explore the scenic slopes of Tsaghkadzor, a charming resort town nestled in the stunning Mount Teghenis, or head to the modern MyLer Mountain Resort near Yeghipatrush, just a short drive from the capital city, Yerevan. With breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks as your backdrop, you'll feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, both resorts offer ski lessons and equipment rentals to help you make the most of your time on the slopes.

02

Hot Springs

Armenia has many hot springs spread throughout the country where you can relax in any of the hot pools, jacuzzis, or saunas. The most well-known are those at Jermuk, which is roughly a two-hour drive from Yerevan. However, others are significantly closer, such as Aghveran, approximately an hour distant, or Hankavan, which is around 45 minutes away from the city.

03

Visit a Christmas Market

During winter, Yerevan lights up with festive decorations and seasonal markets leading up to the New Year celebrations. Visitors can enjoy hot chocolate, pastries, mulled wine, roasted corn, and handmade gifts while strolling through the city’s lively holiday atmosphere. Keep in mind that Christmas in Armenia is celebrated on January 6, so some festive celebrations and events may begin later than in other countries. Tip: Check out our events page for specific dates and details on seasonal events, including the festive light switch-on ceremony, which usually takes place in mid-December. Check out the events on your website.

04

Ice Skate in Yerevan & Gyumri

Head over to Swan Lake next to Yerevan’s Opera and Ballet Theater, rent a pair of skates, and enjoy the romantic atmosphere right in the heart of the city. In Gyumri, winter also brings outdoor ice skating and, when conditions allow, opportunities for wild ice skating on naturally frozen surfaces, adding a raw and authentic winter experience.

05

Eat Khash on Mount Aragats

Khash is a winter delicacy derived from the Armenian word for "boil." It consists of boiled cow foot with garlic and salt, and topped with dry day-old lavash bread... wash it down with a shot of homemade vodka (oghi) for the full experience.

06

Snowshoeing & Winter Hiking

Snowshoeing and winter hiking open up Armenia’s forests and mountains in a completely different way during the colder months, with quiet trails, fresh snow, and crisp air creating a peaceful atmosphere for nature lovers. Areas such as Dilijan and Vanadzor are especially beautiful in winter. Tip: You can rent snowshoes and winter gear from HIKEArmenia or local tourism information centres or DMOs, to easily enjoy snowy trails. https://hikearmenia.org/

Winter Photography & Scenic Drives

Winter transforms Armenia’s monasteries, fortresses, and landscapes into breathtaking scenes ideal for photography. Snowy mountain roads and panoramic viewpoints offer unforgettable drives with dramatic views at every turn.
